Nestle announces $60million dollar expansion to create up to 200 jobs!

Nestle to expand it's frozen food manufacturing plant located in Jonesboro which will create up to 200 more jobs. The 320,000 sq ft plant will expand by some 50,000 feet to make room for a new bakery to produce pizza bases. A new production line will be installed in the current facility to make and package the pizzas sold under both the Stouffer's and Lean Cuisine names.

Andy Darley, who moved to Jonesboro last August as Nestle factory manager, said the construction will bring multiplier effects to the economy, in addition to the creation of up to 200 new permanent jobs. He states it reflects well on the current Jonesboro workforce, which has shown they are committed to making the high-quality products at competitive operating costs.

$90-$100 Million Dollar Construction Projects Around the Corner for ASU

You will see lots of activity on the ASU campus in the next few months, especially if plans proceed as intended.

First up? The Chickasaw building: Renovations have already begun in this main building off Caraway Road. It is being redesigned for the College of Nursing & Health Professions and the Eugene W. Smith Center for Excellence. The project will include classrooms, seminar rooms, and support spaces. Completion is scheduled for August 1st.

Next? The Reynolds Center: The Reynolds Center for Health Sciences will be constructed just North of the Chickasaw Building on Caraway Road. The Donald W. Reynolds Foundation donated $14.5 million for the 3 level health sciences building, the largest single donation in the university's history. The new structure, estimated at 50,000 sq ft, will house the Speech & Hearing Clinic, nursing & nurse anesthesia skills laboratories, a computer lab, classrooms, and research space. More than $1 million in furnishings are included.

For the future: Honors Hall; A residence hall for honor students is in the planning process, and will provide 222 beds in three, 3-story buildings for ASU's honor students in residence hall style accommodations east of Whitaker Street. Four bedroom unites will have two bathrooms, a combined living room & kitchenette. Will also include designated parking.

Student apartments are also in the final planning stages, with a 198 bed facility to be divided into units featuring four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room and a full kitchen each. The complex is to include three apartment buildings, a commons building, laundry facilities, and a dedicated parking lot.

The Delta Center for Economic Development, funded by a $1.8 million dollar grant, will be a 2-story steel framed structure just south of the Business Building. The 21,344 sq ft facility will house the Delta Center, the Small Business Development Center, and centers for entrepreneurial and family business studies, economic education and transportation management.

Groundbreaking for the Student Recreation & Wellness Center is scheduled for April 4th. Construction is expected to begin in August and be completed by December 2009.

New Valley View Head Football Coach

The Valley View Blazers are without a head coach no longer: Shannon Sherman, formerly of Westside football, announced today he is taking over the Head Coaching job at Valley View high school.

The previous coach, Randy Coleman, made the decision February 12 to move back to his alma mater, Jonesboro High School, to take over the Head Coaching position there.

Although Sherman did not have many wins with Westside, he will get a 2nd chance with the Blazer Football Program, which Coleman built from the ground up.

I'm sure we will see great things from Valley View sports in 2008 & 2009!

Jonesboro's Nettleton School District to Receive $2 Million in Funding

On Tuesday the Nettleton School board approved a resolution for the State Department of Education to issue $2million in bonds to the school district for building construction funds, money that would go to a new track, softball & baseball fields remodeling, and the University Heights Elementary expansion, according to Superintendent James Dunivan.

The board has been in discussion, and approved the bonds originally back in December.

In other news, the University Heights new addition is nearing completion, and is estimated to be nearly finished sometime in April. The campus is expected to support up to 500 students when complete. Construction includes doubling the size of the cafeteria & library, as well as adding office space and building 14, much needed, new classrooms.

Nutt resigns as head basketball coach at ASU

With less than two weeks left in the season, Arkansas State University's Dickey Nutt and Athletic Director Dr. Lee announced that Mr. Nutt has relinquished his duties as head basketball coach.

Two assistant basketball coaches were named as co-interim head coaches until the end of the season.

The 2nd-winning-est coach in ASU history has been head coach since 1995, with eight years as an assistant before that.

Nutt declined to answer questions from the media after the announcement, but did state he was heading to his son's basketball game, Jonesboro High School vs. Forrest City.

Nutt was the only coach in ASU history to take the 15-seed spot in the NCAA tournament in 1999. (They lost in the 1st round to Utah.)

Rumored new coaches?? Nolan Richardson, former University of Arkansas coach (who brought them to three final four appearances and the National Championship in 1994.)
